Term 4

This term we will be studying World War Two. Our class book is called ‘Goodnight Mr. Tom’.  London is poised on the brink of World War II. Timid, scrawny Willie Beech is evacuated to the English countryside. At first, he is terrified of everything, of the country sounds and sights, even of Mr. Tom, the gruff, kindly old man who has taken him in.  But then, he learns about kindness, being non-judgmental and that the world can be a better place if you have the right people in it. This is a heart-warming, tear jerking tale which the children will love.

World Book Day

Term 3

This term our class book is being driven by history.  We will be immersing ourselves in the book, Percy Jackson and the lightning Thief. It’s a fantasy-adventure novel based on Greek mythology. The Gods of Ancient Greece start interfering in the world because they think that Percy Jackson has stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt! Whereas, all Percy wants to do is survive another school term! Our enquiry based learning will be based around this. If you are or know of any experts in this area, do not hesitate to get in touch!

Yr5 WOW event – Houses of Parliament

As Ancient Greece is the birthplace of democracy we thought that it would be a great idea to visit the Houses of Parliament.  The children were amazed by the sights and sounds of our capital city and enthralled with the Houses of Parliament. We had a tour and workshop titled ‘Our Journey to Democracy’, which helped the children understand how Britain’s political system has evolved from a monarchy to a democracy.  The workshop ended with a Q and A session with Patchway’s local MP.  The children asked him really thoughtful questions.  They asked him what his party was going to do help the environment. How it was going to promote animal welfare and how he proposed to keep the streets safe. The children were a credit to our school. All of the staff were very proud of them. Their enthusiasm and intrigue made it an amazing day!

Bristol Rovers representatives have been in the school to deliver lessons about the benefits of active lifestyles.

Term 2

This term our class book is driven by science! We will be immersing ourselves in The Infinite Lives of Maisie Day. It’s a mind bending mystery about a girl who must work with the laws of the universe and the love of her family if she is to set her world right. This amazing book will also be the inspiration for our enquiry work, where we will be learning about the wonders of the solar system!

Yr5 Immersion/ WOW event

The children have be making a hand driven working model of the Solar System in preparation for creating a model of the Solar System in the coming weeks.

Term 1

Welcome back to the start of what I am sure will be another successful year. All week the children have really impressed me with their attitude to learning and we have been able to hit the ground running – picking up from last year straight away and making progress. This term our class book will be Grandad’s Island. A sensitive tale about family, love and loss. This will also be the inspiration for our topic work. We will be focussing on geography— Using an Atlas, compass points, symbols and grid references.
