Year 6 Visit to Westminster

Pupils in Year 6 took part in an educational visit to Westminster last week to support their learning about government and democracy.

Upon arrival, the group passed Big Ben and Parliament Square, where they observed a number of public demonstrations taking place. This provided a real-world example of how individuals and groups engage in democratic processes.

At the Houses of Parliament, pupils completed security checks before beginning a guided tour. The tour offered an overview of the structure and function of key areas within Parliament, including where debates are held and legislation is discussed. Guides also highlighted the historical significance of the building and the role it continues to play in shaping national decision-making. The children were amazed with the art-work and architecture that surrounded them. 

The visit helped pupils gain a clearer understanding of how the UK Parliament operates and how laws are developed. Our local MP was very impressed by the thoughtful questions asked throughout the session: questions challenging the myths around immigration and questions asking for justification of some wealthy individuals evasion of tax contributions.

This was a valuable learning experience and a memorable one that will support ongoing curriculum work on government, citizenship and British values, which will hopefully lead to the children making contributions to their community.
