2025 FESTIVAL OF YOUTH SPORT CHAMPIONS!
Wow! What a fantastic performance from the boys and girls of Coniston Primary School.
On Saturday 7th June, the South Gloucestershire PE Association held the 23rd Festival of Youth Sport.
Coniston were entered for the Boccia, New Age Kurling and Athletics competitions. We excelled in every event. The boccia competitors each picked up silver medals and the New Age Kurling picked up silver medals too in two closely fought contests.
On the athletics track, the success continued. The events (75m sprint, 600m, 4x100m relay, standing long jump, vortex throw and speed bounce) were split into boys and girls categories:
The boys won both of the 75m sprint heats, placed very well in the 600m and won the 4x100m relay.
The field event results were outstanding with the boys beating many of their personal bests under the worst of the British weather!
The story for the girls was similar. They won the 75m sprint, the relay AND had a first place finisher in the 600m from a year 4 child, who was racing year 5 children! In the field events, the girls were amazing: throwing and jumping to some amazing distances.
Coming back for the finals was where the children really showed their talents. The girls 75m A final resulted in a photo finish with Coniston being awarded 2nd place by 1/400 of a second. There was no photo finish for the relay however, as they won the 4x100m relay by some distance, with some brilliant team-work on show during the baton exchanges.
All this culminated in a GOLD medal for the boys’ team AND a GOLD medal for the girls’ team. A feat rarely achieved by any school.
Once again, well done Coniston!
FOYS 2024
This event, at the first-class WISE athletics stadium, included schools from all over the county with Coniston being one of, if not the, smallest school at the event. The children demonstrated that within this small school there is a huge amount of talent and that when you put talent together with hard work you can get fantastic results. We took part in three sports, Boys and Girls Athletics, Boccia and New Age Kurling.
The athletics team took part in many events: the sprint races and heats; 600m; sprint relay events; standing long jump; speed bounce; standing triple jump; and the vortex throw. The pupils of Coniston Primary School excelled.
The children were a credit to the community they represent. They were perfectly behaved, supported each other well and demonstrated to the children from other schools the high standards that can be reached if the necessary work is put in (some performances, particularly the triple jump, drew gasps from opponents and inspired them to get practising right there and then!). Coniston left the event with an overall 1st place for the Boys and 2nd place for the Girls – an amazing achievement.
The Boccia and New Age Kurling team were also outstanding. They came together as a team, supporting each other and persevered in two very difficult sports. They challenged themselves to get a medal and that is exactly what they did…well they got 2 actually, Bronze for New Age Kurling and Silver for Boccia! The skill the children showed under pressure shows just how talented they are. The smiles tell it all…a great day had by all. Thank you to the parents for your support and the staff for spending their Saturday at this brilliant event.
